Macro Photography
Macro Photography for Beginners: Enlarge your print. Some people may regard this as cheating but it certainly is the easiest way to make a small image bigger. Either request a 5"x7" or 6"x8" or larger print and then trim it back to size to fit in your album. Some labs have printing machines with display screens and zoom lenses and can enlarge the centre portion of the negative onto the standard 4"x6" prints, usually these are clever machines and can also jog the negative sideways so an off centre subject can be handled. To achieve further correction like moving the image up or down then usually a separate negative carrier is used to crop the negative to exactly what you want. The zoom method onto the 4"x6" print usually costs nothing extra or maybe only a small charge as it is only button pressing by the console operator. If the separate negative carrier is used then usually a few dollars are added to the service price. Not only does this method make a macro image bigger it can also be used for distant subjects to make your zoom lens longer. Try and find a processing lab with one of these clever printing machines. Upside. Cheap macro extension by maybe up to a 2x factor, also a tele lens extender. Often adds no extra cost to a reprint. Downside. Grain enlarged, dust on negative enlarged, lens faults enlarged. Might be hard to find a lab to do this.
